--------------------------------------- 21. Prophet Younus (AS) Quran [6:86] And Isma'il and Al-Yasa', and Yunus, and Lut: and to all We gave favour above the nations. Yunus bin Matta (AS) was sent by Allah to the people of Nineveh, which was a town in the area of Mawsil in northern Iraq. (Ibn Kathir) He is also known as Dhul-Nun. When his people refused to obey, and continued sinning he angrily decided to leave them and head somewhere else. He boarded cargo ship but somehow the ship was caught in a tempest. The people onboard decided to throw him after casting lots. As soon as he was thrown into the waters, Allah ordered a big fish to swallow him. Upon realising his mistake (of leaving his people in a rage without consultation of Allah) he immediately repented and cried "La Ilaha Illa Annta Subhaanaka, Inni Kunnto Minazzalemeen" (There is no God but you: glory to you: I was indeed amongst the wrongdoers!). Upon hearing his cry Allah ordered the fish to cast him forth on a shore. A plant grew over him which provided shadow from the heat. After gaining strength from the sickness he went back to his people who agreed to follow the commands of Allah. [37:139] So also was Younus among those sent (by Us). [37:140] When he ran away (like a slave from captivity) to the ship (fully) laden, [37:141] He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was condemned: [37:142] Then the big Fish did swallow him, and he had done acts worthy of blame. [21:87] And remember Zul-nun, when he departed in wrath: he imagined that We had no power over him! But he cried through the depths of darkness, "La Ilaha Illa Annta Subhaanaka, Inni Kunnto Minazzalemeen" (There is no God but you: glory to you: I was indeed amongst the wrongdoers!) [37:143] Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah, [37:144] He would certainly have remained inside the Fish till the Day of Resurrection. [21:88] So We listened to him: and delivered him from distress: and thus do We deliver those who have faith. [37:145] But We cast him forth on the naked shore in a state of sickness, [37:146] And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the Gourd kind, [68:50] Thus did his Lord choose him and make him of the company of the Righteous. [37:147] And We sent him (on a mission) to a hundred thousand (men) or more. [37:148] And they believed; so We permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while. [10:98]. Why was there not a single township (among those We warned), which believed,- so its faith should have profited it,- except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the penalty of ignominy in the life of the present, and permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while. Prophet Muhammed (Last Messenger of Allah) said: "It is not right for any person to say I am better than Yunus bin Matta" |
